This facility was created with DisplayDA by Bill Steinberg. It is being distributed as freeware.
StuffIt is a general purpose file archival utility. It can maintain archives of files, which may be compressed and/or encrypted.
This DA is not intended to replace the StuffIt User's Manual. It is meant to be a brief synopsis of the most common operations.
----------
To create a new archive, select New Archive… from the File menu. It is suggested that archive names have the ".sit" suffix to reduce confusion.
To open an existing archive, select Open Archive… from the File menu.
Once an archive is created or opened, you may do one of many things:
• Extract entries - If you wish to convert entries in an archive back to regular Mac files, select the entries (using the shift and command keys to extend the selection in the usual manner, or using the Select All command from the Edit menu as needed) to extract, click on the extract button or press command-E. For each selected entry, you will be asked to tell StuffIt where to save the entry and what name to give it. Default names will be suggested. You can also use the Save All command to have all selected entries saved to the same location with their default names. You can also Skip an entry or Cancel the operation all together.
(Note: When extracting encrypted entries, you will need to know the Password with which the encryption was performed.)"
As a short cut, if you open an archive from the Finder and hold down the SHIFT key, all entries in the archive will be automatically extracted and saved in the same folder as the archive. If you select Open Archive… from the File menu, select the archive to open and hold down the SHIFT key when you click open, the same thing will happen.
• Adding entries - You may add more files into an archive by clicking on the Add button or typing command-A. You will be presented with a file selection dialog box. There're a few things you should be aware of. The difference between the Add and Open button is that if a folder is selected, clicking Add will add the entire folder, Open will just open it. The Set button allows you to tell StuffIt what to do when it adds the file(s). The three options within the Set dialog are Lempel-Ziv, Huffman and NewDE. The first two tells StuffIt to attempt to compress the file(s) with the specified algorithm. It is suggested that both be checked if you want compression. (See User's Manual for more details.) The last option allows you to have StuffIt encrypt the files as they're added into the archive. PLEASE DON'T LOSE YOUR PASSWORD IF YOU USE THE ENCRYPT OPTION!
Multiple Add is described in the Manual.
• Comments - Selecting Comments… from the File menu or clicking on the "C" button in the archive contents display allows you to view the comments for that archive, if any. (Note: A "C" denotes the existence of comments whereas a "c" means that none exist.) You may add/modify/remove comments from archives as you please.
• UnPack… - This choice on the Other menu is NOT for decompressing/decrypting StuffIt archive files. It is for decompressing PackIt type ".pit" files and is included for compatibility only.
